FAQ'S

Q. How old do I have to be to climb?

A. We do not have a minimum age for climbers. All climbers must be able to fit into a climbing harness and have the desire to climb. Typically kids start climbing around age 5, but we have kids as young as 2 years old climb regularly.

Q. Will I need to rent equipment?A. All classes and personal belays include the necessary equipment in the cost of the course.  Top rope climbing does require harness, shoes and helmets for climbers age 12 and under.

Q. Can I bring my own equipment?
A. If you own your own climbing equipment, bring it with you! It must be in good condition, less than 10 years from the manufacture date, fit properly, and be specifically designed for use in climbing. If you don't own equipment yet, no problem. We have harnesses (top-rope), climbing shoes (top rope & bouldering), chalk and helmets available for rent.

Q. Are first time climbers allowed to boulder without taking a course?
A. We generally recommend first time climbers sign up for a Personal Belay on their first visit. First time boulderers will need to take a brief, free bouldering safety orientation with our staff before climbing. Children must be accompanied by an adult at all times.

Q. What is the minimum age for belay certification?
A. The minimum age for belay certification is 15 years old. Some youth younger than 15 enrolled in our Climbing Teams will be allowed to belay with coach supervision.

Q. Do I need an appointment?
A. We strongly encourage making an appointment for any course or program that requires staff assistance. We do our best to accommodate walk-ins but cannot guarantee we'll have staff available immediately when you arrive. With an appointment and 50% deposit we'll make sure our staff is scheduled and ready just for you. For more information or to make a reservation, call our instructors at (203) 416-5500.

Q. I already know how to belay, how do I get certified by Carabiners?
A. All you need to do is take our free certification test. If you can demonstrate proper equipment use, thorough partner check, safe belay technique, ability to catch a fall, controlled lowering, and a figure eight retrace knot you'll be all set. If its been a while, we offer a brief belay refresher for just $15.

Q. Do I need to wear a helmet?
A. Carabiners has helmets available for those that would like to wear them. We ask first time climbers under the age of 10 to wear a helmet on their first climbs while they learn proper climbing and lowering technique.

Q. Can I use my own climbing equipment?
A. Absolutely! All we ask is that your equipment be in good condition and manufactured specifically for rock climbing, it fit properly, and be less than 10 years from the date of manufacture.

Q. Can I use an ATC or tube style belay device?
A. Carabiners Fairfield does allow climbers with ATC belay experience to become certified for belay on a tube style device (ATC, Reverso, etc). We do not have ATC devices available for rent so be sure to bring your own. We do have Petzl Gri Gri devices available for rent.

What is indoor rock climbing?
Carabiners offers three types of indoor rock climbing on our walls ranging from 15ft to 40ft high. Climbing holds are arranged in routes creating a variety of interesting climbing for climbers of nearly any age or ability.

Top Rope Climbing
Top rope climbing is ideal for beginners and advanced climbers alike. Climbers wear safety harnesses and are "belayed" with ropes on walls ranging from 25-40 feet in height. Top rope climbing requires a certified belayer who controls the rope keeping slack to a minimum, catching any falls and lowering the climber down the wall.

Bouldering
Bouldering is perhaps the simplest form of climbing but the terrain can be extreme! It involves climbing without a rope on shorter walls (~15ft) over padded flooring and gymnastic pads. No certification or appointment is required, just a quick orientation to bouldering safety with our staff. Because of the advanced terrain found in bouldering, we suggest enrolling in a Personal Belay on your first visit. Children must be supervised by an adult in the bouldering area.

Lead Climbing
Lead climbing is an advanced form of climbing where the lead climber clips the rope into preplaced protection called quick draws. The lead wall features mostly overhanging, intermediate to advanced routes intended for experienced, certified lead climbers. Lead Certification is available to climbers that have passed our free lead test or completed a Carabiners Lead Course.
