First Climber Protocol - Auto-Belay

AFRAID of HEIGHTS…?

We hear that all the time. In one respect, it’s music to our ears, implying that you’ll be more focused on safety when you are on the walls. The FCP, as described below, is designed to get you intellectually acquainted with how safe, and easy it is to set up, and use, the state of the art equipment at Carabiners Indoor Climbing.

Before your very first climbs take place you’ll be enabled to lower another climber to experience how easy and controllable the belay device is.

Then, your FCP continues with your several very short climbs, some practice ‘falls’ only 3-5′ off the ground, and practicing getting into the proper lowering position until it becomes second nature. REST ASSURED…virtually everyone feels way more comfortable about their ‘fear of heights’ after taking the FCP…..!!

If your new to the sport of climbing, we provide a great introduction, for the first timers, to see how it all works, how it works on Top Rope, where your shown how the person on the ground sets up and uses the equipment that holds the rope as you climb. After a few short practice climbs your then given instruction on how to use the device called an AUTO-BELAY, where you can climb up after attaching yourself to the AUTO-BELAY and not need a person on the ground holding the rope, called a BELAYER. The AUTO-BELAY lowers you whenever you let go to come down from the climb.

However, first, in the PRO Shop, we show how to wear a climbing harness and to understand the Dress Code requirement of always keeping your harness visible, and by placing the ‘Shirt Over the Pants- Harness Over the Shirt’. It’s an important safety protocol to always be able to see what climbers are wearing, and how they are connected. We’ll also fit you into climbing shoes too.. ‘Snug But Not Too Tight’.

Then, we go up on the mezzanine to see how the equipment works and practice some short top rope climbs with a STAFF BELAYER only 4-5 feet off the ground to get used to letting go of the wall and practice the proper professional lowering position in order to be lowered. You also get to reach over to the STAFF BELAYER and lower each other a little bit, to understand how easy, and controllable, lowering a climber is with state of the art equipment used at Carabiners Indoor Climbing. All the while, you only climb as high as you feel comfortable.

Next, we introduce you to the AUTO-BELAY which is a device that gives you freedom to climb alone upwards without needing a BELAYER… you simply ‘CLIP-IN’ and climb up and whenever you want to come down you just ‘let-go’ and the device lowers you smoothly to the floor.

This introduction, the FCP-AB, only takes 15 minutes or so and you only need to do it once because it gets you aware of the basics of climbing and how to use an AUTO-BELAY. In future visits to Carabiners Indoor Climbing, you just walk in, put the climbing gear on, and get right to the climbing…!!
