First Visit Options
If you’re already a belayer (a person trained to control the climbing rope) and don’t need any staff assistance, then of course, just come on in! However, we encourage making an appointment for any course or program that does requires staff assistance. Walk-ins are welcome, but with an appointment and 50% deposit we’ll ensure our staff is scheduled and ready just for you.
All visitors are asked to complete a registration form before climbing, and this only needs to be done once, on your first visit. Save yourself a few minutes, and CLICK HERE to register beforehand online! Otherwise, just register when you get here.
Personal Belay (Just “climb on”!)
Let our certified staff belayer (the person who controls the climbing rope) take you around the climbing gym and introduce you to sport of indoor climbing. A Personal Belay is a 1-hour climbing session ideal for families and first time climbers of nearly any age or ability. All equipment including climbing shoes, harnesses and helmet are included.
We know almost everyone is afraid of heights to some degree. Rest assured, our professional approach will put you at ease, right from the beginning!
- $50 for up to two climbers
- $20 each additional climber
- Ask about our group rates for 6 or more climbers
- Call (508) 984-0808 to schedule your Personal Belay
Learning how to be a belayer is the first step at becoming self-sufficient in the sport. You will learn how to use the equipment, communicate with your climber, knot-tying, and most importantly how to double-check before each climb. You don’t need to be a climber to be a belayer, if you just want to belay your kids or friends. Day pass, climbing gear, and instruction is included.
- $35 per person (2 or more climbers)
- $50 private lesson
- Includes day pass and equipment rental
- Call (508) 984-0808 to schedule your Belay Course
This course, our most complete starter course, starts with an hour of coaching basic climbing moves (e.g., stemming, mantling, lay-back, etc.), followed by our Belay Course. Now you’ve got a good starting foundation!
- $45 per person (2+)
- $65 private lesson
- Duration: 2 hours
- Day pass & equipment included
- Call (508) 984-0808 to schedule your Intro Course
Appointment vs. Walk In
We strongly encourage making an appointment for any course or program that requires staff assistance. We do our best to accommodate walk-ins but cannot guarantee we’ll have staff available immediately when you arrive. With an appointment and 50% deposit we’ll make sure our staff is scheduled and ready just for you. For more information or to make a reservation, call our instructors at (508) 984-0808.
Belay Certification Test
Do you already know how to belay? If you can demonstrate proper equipment usage, the retraced figure 8 knot, and modern top rope belay technique you should consider taking our free belay certification test. Once you pass our test you’re certified to belay at Carabiner’s!
Has is been a while since you last belayed? Welcome back! Our staff is happy to help update your rusty belay skills. A refresher course is only $10. Make a reservation by calling (508) 984-0808.
Q. How old do I have to be to climb?
A. We do not have a minimum age for climbers. All climbers must be able to fit into a climbing harness and have the desire to climb. Typically kids start climbing around age 5, but we have kids as young as 2 years old climb regularly.
Q. Will I need to rent equipment?
A. If you own your own climbing equipment, bring it with you. It must be in good condition, less than 10 years from the manufacture date, fit properly, and be specifically designed for use in climbing. If you don’t own equipment yet, no problem. We have harnesses (top-rope), climbing shoes (top rope & bouldering), chalk, and helmets available for rent.
Q. Are first time climbers allowed to boulder without taking a course?
A. We generally recommend first time climbers to sign up for a Personal Belay on their first visit. First time boulderers will need to take a brief, free bouldering safety orientation with our staff before bouldering. Children must be accompanied by an adult at all times.
Q. What is the minimum age for belay certification?
A. The minimum age for belay certification is 15 years old. Some youth younger than 15 enrolled in our Climbing Teams will be allowed to belay with coach supervision. Exceptions to this rule can be made at the manager’s discretion.
Q. Do I need an appointment?
Q. I already know how to belay, how do I get certified by Carabiner’s?
A. All you need to do is take our free certification test. If you can demonstrate proper equipment use, thorough partner check, safe belay technique, ability to catch a fall, controlled lowering, and a retraced figure 8 knot you’ll be all set. If it’s been a while, we offer a brief belay refresher for just $10.
Q. Can I use an ATC or tube style belay device?
A. Due to insurance requirements, Carabiner’s New Bedford does not allow ATC or other tube-style belay devices. The only belay device allowed to be used is the Petzl Grigri. Professionals and amateurs alike can learn and use the GriGri quickly and safely. If you do not own a Grigri, we have them available for rental at just $3 each.
Q. Do I need to wear a helmet?
A. Carabiner’s has helmets available (and recommended) for those that would like to wear them. We ask that climbers under the age of 12 to wear a helmet while climbing. Carabiner’s provides climbing helmets free of charge, but customers are welcome to bring their own helmets.
